Service learning projects are something that everyone should get involved in because it allows you to become active in the community and become a leader. For my service learning project I'm focusing of the Arc of the Ozarks. Arc of the Ozarks in an organization that is spread out over the Southwest Missouri area. The Arc is a place for people with any sort of mental or physical disability to be able to come and have a normal life and live just like everyone else. They help those with disabilities find jobs and make money while still contributing to the community.
I really want to get involved in trying to find a way to help the Arc with safety issues and also activities for the kids to get involved in. I still need to do more research about the Arc and things that they could get help with, but that is my focus for this project.
Children with disabilities is what I want to completely have my focus on. Seeing the kids have such a positive out look on life and live without even thinking they are any different gives me so much hope and joy! Those kids have to get through so many obstacles every single day and they keep a smile on their faces all the time. I find it incredible and so inspiring. I'm excited to start seeing how to make a difference with these kids and finding minor or even large issues at the Arc that action can be taken to.

I think you came up with a great idea. I cant wait for your paper to be done i know it will be great!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! It's nice to hear of the Arc that provides this for these people! I've always wanted to find some place that did that, and now I do:)
ReplyDeleteEmma,
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad to hear that you want to find a way to help the Arc with safety issues as well as help them with activities for the kids. I am curious if you have ever volunteered for one of the camps in the Ozarks—like camp Barnabus or Camp Wonderland?
I remember when I was eight years old my mom took me to Camp Wonderland to volunteer with her for the week because she worked for the Springfield Regional Center. There are some pretty vivid memories left in my head from that experience. There was a girl with a disability in our cabin who would have seizures periodically with her condition—she had one in the middle of the night while I was there. Working with those individuals who have disabilities is eye opening!
I know I didn’t really get to talk to you the last couple of class periods, so I am curious how you want to help them with safety? Do you want to help the Arc with safety features that pertain to when kids do activities such as making sure their playground equipment safe? Maybe making sure that the kids have more supervision when they are doing these activities? . . . This is just some food for thought!
I would love to be able to tag along silently with you and video as you help. Your story would be great to put in our promotional video because it is service learning, and you are partnering with a local community service!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great and special opportunity for you to get involved in. I'm so excited for you! I am curious to see how you will do the safety aspect of it?
